What is volume distribution?

Fundamental size distribution generated by Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS) is an intensity distribution that can be converted to a volume distribution (relative proportion of multiple components in the sample based on their mass or volume vs scattering intensity) using Mie theory. This assumes:

  • All particles are spherical
  • All particles are homogeneous
  • Optical properties of particles are known (the real & imaginary components of the refractive index)
  • Accurate intensity distribution
